How to Behave with ICE Agents

It is important to have the right plan of action in case the ICE agents come to your home, place of employment, stop you in the street, or while driving.

Contact us

At Home

  • Do not open the door or ask them to step outside
  • Ask them to show a warrant or slip it under the door
  • If the warrant is valid, they will come in
  • Remain calm
  • Use your right to remain silent
  • Do not fight or try to escape
  • Ask for an interpreter if you do not speak English
  • Do not sign any documents
  • Request translation of the documents

Unless they have a warrant:

  • Do not give them consular documents
  • Do not give them your passport
  • You have the right to not consent to a search

If applicable:

  • Inform ICE agents about children or other vulnerable residents at home
  • Inform ICE agents about your medical issues.
  • Inform ICE agents that you need to arrange for childcare

If they are looking for someone else:

  • You do not have to disclose any information about another person or their location
  • You should not lie
  • Ask them to leave contact details

In Criminal Court

  • Ask to speak to your defender first.

In the Street

  • Do NOT lie
  • Do NOT show any false or expired documents
  • Do NOT run, do NOT resist arrest
  • Use your right to remain silent
  • Do not say anything apart from telling your legal name.
  • Do not disclose your immigration status, place of birth, criminal records
  • You have the right to speak to your attorney
  • You have the right to not consent to personal search
  • You do not have to sign anything

At your Place of Employment

  • Do NOT lie
  • Do NOT show any false or expired documents
  • Do NOT run, do NOT resist arrest
  • Use your right to remain silent
  • Do not disclose your immigration status, place of birth, criminal records
  • You have the right to speak to your attorney
  • You have the right to not consent to personal search
  • You do not have to sign anything
